Cassils was born in Montreal, Quebec and currently resides in Los Angeles. His work involves the sculptural use of the human body and incorporates elements of feminism, body art and gay male aesthetics. His sculptural work features the artist's own body and that of others.
Hard Times
"Hard Times of Cassils" blends live performance with video to illustrate the physical strains involved in maintaining positive physical appearances in modern society. This film shows a slow-motion bodybuilding sequence. It is filled with anxiety and trembling muscles. This film was inspired by the Greek myth of Tiresias who was transformed into a woman, and remained in that form for seven more years.
Hard Times are Hard Times to Cassils. The bodybuilder refers the the Greek mythological figure Tiresias, who was a blind prophet, who transformed into an ordinary woman and lived seven years. The performance carries the stress positions of Hard Times to a new extreme. One sequence has the bodybuilder pressing against a block-shaped of ice that is carved into a man's torso. Cassils slowly melts ice-etched images of a male figure with his body heat.

Becoming an Image
Becoming anImage of Cassils is an immersive performance which challenges the viewer’s ability to see the body in a new way. The audience gathers in front of an unfired-clay obelisk, approximately human-sized. It's lit from above. The audience must be present to see the work unfold before their very eyes, and to hear its whirling motions. The clay begins buckle near the bottom. Eventually, it yields to the onslaught.
The original idea for the work was to be a site-specific installation at ONE Archives Los Angeles, which is the oldest LGBT archive in America. The artist fashioned a 2,000-pound clay sculpture that he carved in the shape of the archive. The sculpture was then open to the public, who were invited to take it apart in the dark. The exhibition lasted four consecutive days. A multichannel audio track accompanied the work with sharp breaths as well as wet punches. This exhibition challenged the audience to confront the violence committed against trans people.
Inextinguishable Fire
The first solo museum exhibition of Kris Grey's work is now open. This exhibition invites viewers to question how they see the world. Grey uses abstraction in two of his works to challenge the notion of representation. Kris Grey is a former collaborator. While his earlier works are more realistic in reality, Inextinguishable Fire In Cassils is a much more personal show.
Inextinguishable fire featured a full-body burn that was performed before a live audience. To create slow motion fire, the Phantom camera recorded the stunt. It can shoot at 1,000 frames per second.

Benglis, Homage
"Advertisement for Homage to Benglis" was conceived to highlight feminist artists working to change the cultural landscape of America. This homage comes in a c/print measuring 40x30 inches. There are three copies. Robin Black photographed the homage.
The homage is a collaboration between the artist and photographer Robin Black, and staged a spoof on Linda Benglis's 1974 feminist artwork, Advertisement. Benglis is seen holding a double ended phallus in an advertisement for Art Forum. Cassils replaces Benglis’s double-ended penulus with her own in the homage. The result is an assortment of self-empowered pictures that represent trans representation.
