Cassils at Museum of Contemporary Art

90s fashion

Cassils is a performance artist, bodybuilder, and personal trainer. He was born in Montreal, Quebec. His work includes the sculptural application of the human physique and incorporates elements such as feminisms, body art and gay man aesthetics. His sculptures are made from the artist's own body as well that of others.

Hard Times

"Hard Times of Cassils" blends live performance with video to illustrate the physical strains involved in maintaining positive physical appearances in modern society. The film explores this phenomenon by showing a bodybuilding routine in slow motion, with trembling muscles and a sense of anxiety that alludes to the psychological strain involved in transforming one's appearance. The Greek myth of Tiresias inspired the film. She was transformed into woman and lived in this form for seven long years.

In Hard Times for Cassils, the bodybuilder refers to the Greek mythological figure of Tiresias, a blind prophet who transformed into a woman for seven years. This performance takes the stresses of Hard Times to an extreme. One sequence has the bodybuilder pressing against a block-shaped of ice that is carved into a man's torso. Cassils' body heat slowly melts the ice-etched idealized male figure.

Becoming an Image

Becoming anImage of Cassils is an immersive performance which challenges the viewer’s ability to see the body in a new way. An unfired clay obelisk the size of a human gathers the audience. It is lit from above. The audience must look at the work as it unfolds before them, and then listen to its whirling movement. The clay begins to buckle near the bottom and eventually yields to the onslaught.

The original idea for the work was to be a site-specific installation at ONE Archives Los Angeles, which is the oldest LGBT archive in America. He created a clay sculpture weighing 2,000 pounds that he carved into the shape of the archive. The audience was then invited to attack the sculpture in the darkness. The exhibition lasted for four days and was accompanied with a multichannel audio track featuring sharp breaths, wet punches, and other sounds. This exhibition challenged viewers confronting the violence against transgender people.

Inextinguishable Fire

Now open is the first solo museum exhibit of Kris Grey's art. This exhibition forces viewers to question their worldviews. Grey uses abstraction to oppose the idea of representation in two works. Kris Grey was his previous collaborator. His earlier works have a more realistic view of the world, while Inextinguishable Fire In Cassils is a more personal show.

Inextinguishable fire featured a full-body burn that was performed before a live audience. To create slow-motion fire, the Phantom camera captured the stunt at 1000 frames per second.

Benglis, Homage

"Advertisement For Homage to Benglis" is a project to promote feminist artists that are changing the cultural landscape in America. This homage comes in a c/print measuring 40x30 inches. There are three copies. Robin Black was the photographer.

Robin Black and the artist created this homage in collaboration. It is a parody of Linda Benglis's feminist artwork Advertisement, which was published in 1974. Benglis poses in an advertisement for the Art Forum, holding a double-ended phallus. Cassils substitutes Benglis’s doubled-ended phallus for her own in this homage. The result is an assortment of self-empowered pictures that represent trans representation.

FAQ

What are some popular fashion trends you see?

Trends are temporary fads. Trends come and go but they don’t last forever. Fashion designers know this, and they keep an eye out for what is hot right now.

They create collections according to current trends and then market them at different times throughout a year. These collections are often called seasonal because they change seasonally depending of when they were made.

Spring/summer are the most popular seasons for fashion design. Because people love light, airy clothing during summer, this is why it's so popular.

As winter approaches, clothing tends become heavier and warmer. This is when people are more likely to wear sweaters, scarves (boots), gloves and coats.

How can a trend differ from a fashion fad.

Trends are an idea that is in demand. It's not something that happens to be trendy but becomes a part of our culture. Trends will be here to stay. They are a permanent fixture of our lives.

A fad is temporary. It comes and goes quickly. It doesn't last for long enough to have any lasting impact on our lives.

My style changes.

As you age, the style you choose changes. Your body shape changes, too. Your hair color and skin tone change.

You might even start liking new things. As we age, we learn more about ourselves, and our tastes change.

How can I make my own clothing?

You will need to learn how you can sew if you want to make your own clothes. There are many tutorials online that will teach you how sew.

Simple clothes such as shorts and T-shirts can be made without any sewing skills.

You can use fabric glue instead of sewing to attach buttons and zippers.

How To

How to style clothes

How to style clothes? It's important to wear what you like. Fashion trends change daily. It is not a good idea to try to duplicate someone else's style. Instead learn from them and create your own style.

Simple and easy styling is the best thing for you. Don't try to find the perfect fit if you want to look great. Don't worry about whether you have a shirt, pants (or jacket), skirt, or other garment. Instead, choose what suits you best. You can combine them all to make one outfit. You don't need to have many pieces, as long as you're coordinating them well. Mixing up patterns and colors is also a good idea as different outfits can be worn with different combinations.

You can always add accessories to finish off any outfit. Accessories are typically small accessories, such as scarves and hats, watches or necklaces, bracelets or earrings, purses, and rings. They'll help give your outfit some pizzazz and make it pop. Consider what colors go well with your outfit and which are more contrastive. For example, if you're wearing red shoes with blue jeans, you might choose a red scarf to match.
